I was seven years old when I learned I wasn’t safe to be me.
I told my mother about the visions I saw and the voices I heard. She washed my mouth out with soap and made me stand in the corner and confess my sins.
I learned to hide anything that might be too much, too different, too me. Anxiety became my norm. I craved close relationships but burned every bridge because I didn’t know how to be myself and stay safe.
That early experience sparked a decades long quest to understand why I wasn’t good enough and how to break free of that belief.
What started as trying to fix what was “wrong” with me became my life’s work as a doctor of human sexuality and a return to my childhood spirituality.
